Uniqueness is a trait that is desired across many spectrum's by everybody in this world with many conscious steps taken by people to try to achieve this in their day to day comings and goings. Perhaps a new wardrobe is obtained to try to stand out amongst the endless crowd of other human beings out there, or better yet, driving a fancy car with all the bells and whistles available to man today in an effort to make sure not to blend in with your surroundings. I firmly believe that we as those souls who compose the skateboarding community have discovered the absolute best way to stand out from the crowd and really portray boldly the uniqueness of our selves. We are an underground subculture that feeds off of the mainstream and composes art out of urban artifacts and infrastructure that was never at first intended or even imagined. They try to stop us by installing artificial barriers in our natural environments, all in an effort to discontinue and degrade our habitats that feed our very survival. We are a creature being constantly hunted and attacked by those who claim we are disruptive and destructive, forcing us to always be ready for this run to be our last one before we have to find an area that will allow us to practice and produce the art we have grown so found of. Skateboarders are a misunderstood group whose intentions are read in a completely wrong context by those who don't push. Although this is stated in the sense that a problem is associated with the disconnection between the general public and skateboarders, I do not find this to be the case at all. I thrive off of the fact that I am seen as someone fighting the current rather then submitting to the general public's ideologies of how one is to behave around man made structures. This mindset of sane and humane rebellion is one that allows so many of us to cling to a feeling of one-ness that makes us know we are different then every single other person out there. Every time a trick is attempted on terrain and accomplished as the indivual controlling the plank saw it in their head, it goes into the history of time and shall never, ever be repeated in the exact same manner by anyone ever again.
If further proof is needed to convience those of you reading this that skateboarding is the most influential art form of our current time, I invite you to stroll around the downtown of any large metropolis and carefully observe all of the ledges that have been "Skate Stopped" by the propitiatory business. The resulting structures that meet this criteria is staggering and is a clear sign that skateboarding breeches into the mainstream and truly is an art form unrecognized by its modern viewers. These obscene objects intended to leave us with out a canvas to conduct our painting also outline the reality that our creativity is absolutely observed and noted, speaking testimony to its existence as a thriving community which reaches out to all who chose to embrace it. The skate community is alive and thriving y'all which means we are doing something right. Go make beauty out of things that other wise are just plain and ordinary objects. Society may think that wax makes their property look tacky and ugly, but they've never tail slide the set of ledges they own so don't be to upset when they come out and ask you to leave or skate stop your favorite spot; they know not what they are doing. JAH Bless y'all and don't let them win, our art is to beautiful to be contained despite their efforts to do so. Hit your local hard streets and go for a rip knowing that no matter how hard they can try, no one will create art the way you do and no one can stop you from doing it.
I am a skater who lives in Baltimore, MD. I am looking to spread the love of skateboarding through both visual and written means.
