...a gift that is not to be under appreciated. This manifestation of our own imaginations is the key to freedom of self exploration and self expression that goes unrivaled in its benefits to the physical, mental, and spiritual components of the human body. Being a remedy for all 3 of these aspects greatly contributes to what makes skateboarding so genuinely unique and special to those who have chosen to abide by the life of shred. We are a rare breed, misread and misunderstood by nearly all we encounter except another one of our own. This general misconception has helped foster the tight knit crews rolling around nearly every town in America.
The scene surrounding our culture has always been a very grass roots affair partially by choice but also from necessity due to lack of main stream acceptance. This persecution so to speak of the skateboarding community has lead to a very democratic system of operations amongst us skaters in an effort to maximize the little power we did/do possess. This is said in the sense that the people have the power to steer the ship in the direction they see fit. We for a long time have rallied together for skate parks to be built, or for No Skateboarding laws to be lifted or reduced. These actions as a united force have formed a bond between us brothers and sisters of shred which has lead to the thriving community we are a part of today. For the most part we have been able to collectively skip out on mainstream infiltration which would have awarded an outsider authority amongst us; keeping a majority of our intentions pure and in line with skateboarding's roots. But this alignment with where we came from is not a guarantee, but rather it is the result of conscious choices made by influential individuals throughout skating's history. The raddest part about these pillars of our past is that many of them were not the most talented riders of their day but merely the most passionate. Today we are at a critical point in skateboarding where a choice must be made and actions accomplished. As skate culture progresses, each and everyone of us plays a part in where it is going simply by being a part of the scene and having an interest in skate media, products, and the culture.
Now is the time to ward off the vultures of the skate culture by doing what we skaters have done since the very beginning; look out for our own. By identifying companies that align with the attitude that you are looking to see progress and endure in the scene, control is granted to you via support of these companies promoting what it is skateboarding is to you. "Support" can be done by purchasing equipment and apparel from them but also by spreading the good word to all your homies affording them to opportunity to reach out and support them as well. The simplest and easiest way to maintain a positive influence on your local scene, as well as the scene as a whole, is to visit your local shop when you are looking for that freshie set up. This is the best place to get plugged in to any events going off close as well as serving as a wonderful environment to ask questions about particular pieces of equipment or get the inside scoop on a spot to poach later that afternoon. Skateboarding has a way of bringing people together in a way that cannot be described or inscribed into words, it simply must be experienced to be appreciated. Get out there in your neck of the woods and experience the unmistakable feeling awarded to you from skateboarding, all the while maintaining a positivity whilst making those conscious decisions on where we are heading next. JAH Bless y'all and remember to keep it simple and just have fun! Go Skate!
I am a skater who lives in Baltimore, MD. I am looking to spread the love of skateboarding through both visual and written means.
